The name “Hot Potato”

When my daughter was in preschool, she came home every day with a new drawing. At just three years old, each creation was a masterpiece in her eyes. I loved how confidently she described what each picture was meant to be. .

Each night, we’d tape her latest work to the designated art wall.

One day, she brought home a red blob. With pure excitement she declared, “It’s a hot potato!” To me, it looked like a simple red blob, but her beaming little voice made it unforgettable. Of course, the “hot potato” earned its rightful spot on the wall of masterpieces.

That hot potato hung framed on the wall for the next three years. While teaching virtually, I must have glanced up at it thousands of times and when it came time to choose a name for our art studio, I looked up at that familiar red blob and knew instantly—Hot Potato Art Studio was the perfect name.

That hot potato drawing represents everything I want our art classes to provide students- creativity and confidence! Students can create their own interpretations of their art. It doesn’t matter if someone else thinks it’s just a red blob- why matters is how your art makes you feel.

After three years of living on the art wall, me moved the Hot Potato picture to the center wall of our garage studio and that little red blob has turned into our favorite mascot. We can’t wait to hang it up in a brick-and-mortar studio when the time comes!
